Hey guys!

How's holidays so far? For me...I'VE GOT A NEW SIBLING! XD

Okay ya and as you know CCAO will be here soon (Dec 30), I'm wondering what we're going to do about the booth. Do Sze Yan and Nellie and all need help in making the souvenirs? How's it progressing? I'm quite excited about the orientation actually..and this is our final chance to save rg fencing. We want our best put in for it. By the way do we have a fencing banner or something to place on the booth? But unfortunately I can't be there on the day itself with all of you cos I have to tour the prc scholars )): So to make up, I can help to set up the booth and stuff, just let me know if you need any help in anything.

So we're going to put up the posters before CCAO huh? Let's flood the school with fencing posters then lols. Jiayou everyone!

Let's be on our best during CCA orientation, must be very enthu and friendly to the sec1s, it's very important, for instance many of us joined softball because their seniors were interacting with the juniors a lot during the orientation. Don't believe in giving up, WE CAN SAVE FENCING !!!!!!!!

All the best to the fencing camp organizing team, looking forward to a fun and fulfilling camp! It's not an easy task and it's right after EOYs somemore, so we have to cheer them on LOL. I shan't give suggestions since *AHEEMMMM* I am XTRA, haha, no lah I'm just being nice :]

I miss free fencing!! So I assume there'll be training on Thu? Haha, good for you --> the last post! I don't know whether I'll be in a good mood to fencer after gotten back the results. I hope they are decent though..I HOPE, esp math.

WELL WELL. i really don't know what else what we can do to salvage the situation. fencing is on the brink of collapsing, and will if nothing's done about it. so i guess we shouldn't rant on and on about how unfairly fencing is being treated in rgs. such stuff are way under us, YEAH? ((:
ccab and moe won't change their policy anytime soon (given their inflexibility) especially not for the 20+ of us? so if we can't work on our own, it's best that we get EXTERNAL help i.e. PARENTS!!! GOGOGO

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: (so many things went unsaid that day)
we acknowledge that the school has over 40 ccas and can't afford to sustain the small population interested in fencing. perhaps such funds will be better utilised if given to UGs, where they can use them for buying strepsils. on a more serious note, we won't insist that you fully subsidise such an expensive sport. in fact i feel that subsidies are secondary reason why fencing has such a low intake. if it was, then our sec2 cohort won't have so many fencers. YES? (: most importantly, we should be core. you say that you wanna encourage interest in fencing but dont you see you're absolutely killing it? subsidies DO play a part by aggravating the problem but definitely not the sole reason. so please stop emphasising on it, making us look like unreasonable twerps hankering for the measly subsidies you wont even think of offering!

OHKAY ENOUGH SAID. i realise we write such loong posts, NO ONE READS IT IN ITS ENTIRETY. so let's just try our best to help other FENCERS-TO-BE who may never have the opportunity to develop their interest. noble as it seems, thats what we all want right? we dont want to see fencing crumble to bits cos we ourselves have put in so much effort into it and it can benefit so many more out there!! YAY YAY YAY!

jacqueline here. HEY BENITA thank you so much for setting this up. i like the title haha. um i'm blogging before actually seeing the layout of the blog.i'll go check it out later. yeah.
kay since only um. six of us were there to hear what mrs chan had to say, i'll tell you the gist of it. she told us the history of the fencing club in rgs, and said that fencing has never been subsidised (so i guess no hope of subsidies for us) and that it was only started as an interest kind of thing. then she argued that if people really have the interest in fencing, they will be willing to pay for it, which is true i guess. and she said about how SAA is not just an award for the school but in recognition of all the achievements. WHICH IS REALLY STUPID i think. the school dumps 25% of the population in UGs, and claim that they're doing this to recognise their achievements. but the UGs are suffering! a lot of their sec ones aren't enthusiastic about the cca at all, and we fencers here are trying to get some recognition while a lot of the sec ones are being sian, and their seniors aren't happy about the situation either.

i think core/merit is just stupid and the school should really get rid of it. it doesn't matter if ri can survive with it, but we can't. yeah. but i dunno whether the school will even consider this. but at least they're appealing for only 15% to be in UGs for SAA.

well i think if we try hard enough we'll be able to get enough sec ones next year to reduce our fees. hahaha. and ensure the continuation of FENCING.

Hey everyone! Xiaodi here, thought I should drop by and say something about the issue of school dismissing our fencing club (and it's not a very brilliant idea for this blog to die before it lives for 3 days don’t you think so?) Oh wells…

I’m just kinda wondering WHY the school would want to think of closing down fencing. One reason is probably fencing school division competitions don’t go into the formal National Schools Sports/Games list and therefore the medals we fought our lives for are simply worthless to the school. After all, RGS is a practical institution. It wouldn’t want to waste its resources on some CCAs that fail to do them any good. Just for your information, I am a devoted member of LYFE club too and I was just as upset when I heard they are most probably closing down LYFE by next year or so (me, sad right?). Yes, why shouldn’t they? LYFE doesn’t bring them Gold with Honors in SYF, LYFE doesn’t bring them gold medals, LYFE doesn’t send the entire club to line up during morning assemblies to get recognized by principals and their chairperson to present the trophies to the school population. Same for Interact (I’m not too sure if it’s already been closed down). Look at how considerate the school is! Always striving to reduce cost (and debts) and shifting their funds onto some more worthy activities such as UNIFORM GROUPS! That will bring them so much pride with the prestigious whatever excellence awards. Yes, we do not bring them nationally recognized trophies, but SO WHAT? Fencing is a club started by our seniors and all along we have been producing national fencers. If they are worried about the cost, well, why should they anyway – since we are paying the FULL COST ourselves, aren’t we? Interact, LYFE and fencing are all very meaningful CCAs – just like any other CCAs in the school. Just as Berny said, we deserve the recognition and we deserve the respect.

Personally I don’t feel very affected by the Merit CCA thing, since now we hardly rely on CCA points for anything. Just that we don’t get our fees subsidized. However, it’s truly an insult to us fencers by making us the only sport that goes into that category. The school should have a clear understanding that we put in just as much hard work and training time as any other sports. Because of this, fencing often gets labeled as ‘slack CCA’ based on some people’s shallow judgment of us. Also thinking on the behalf of the entire club, by making fencing a merit CCA practically drove away all our juniors. The number of juniors is devastatingly pathetic; just how many CCAs have TWO juniors? Next year, we have to lure more sec1s into fencing to keep our passion for fencing burning in RG…however hard it is (I shudder to recall the parents’ expressions when we told them how much the fencing equipments cost during open house and how it’s not a core CCA that is required from every girl). The school’s excuse is ‘too little participation in the CCA. Why, exactly! It’s because YOU made fencing into a Merit CCA in the first place and refused to subsidize our fees!

Fencing is as much a sport as any other games! In fact, it’s more original and has a longer and richer history than many! Why isn’t it an official sport competed in the National School Sports/Games? Too little participation? I am really disappointed with the school for being so practical. When Mrs Ummu Choo tells us to be proud Rafflesians, I feel like snorting. You tell me HOW TO?
Doesn’t our school feel proud when we are able to organize the annual Nature Race single-handedly and are able to successfully spread the environmental concerns to the primary school kids and leave them with memorable memories? Aren’t they proud of our passion for doing community works? Aren’t they burning with pride when they see a (n) (ex-) RGS girl being featured in the papers as a top national fencer?

Maybe I have many inccorect assumptions made about the school or biased opinions here, but at least this is how it seems to me.

Dear fencers, we need to put a stop to all these. We can’t do much if some authoritative souls despise our CCA because of some personal conflicts but at least we have to show our patriotism to our passion. Before we have a right to ask them to return our pride as fencers (although we never lost any despite all these, did we?), we need to first EARN respect from them. Train hard, get juniors (LOTS OF THEM!) and of course, maintain harmony among ourselves. Now we are so alone, so pitifully at the mercy of the school (probably only 1 person who has a say in this), but let’s not do any naming here.
